Lviv Welcomes Guests With Kutia

On January 7th 2013 south Ukrainian Lviv will host the festival dedicated to the celebration of the Orthodox Christmas with public cooking, presentation and tasting of traditional Ukrainian Christmas meal – kutia. A big kettle with one ton of kutia will be cooked under the open sky in front of the Lviv Opera House.

The eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv will present a festive Christmas-themed tram on the day of Orthodox Christmas – January 7, 2013. The fancily decorated tram will use the route, followed by the first trams in the city. Several popular bands will entertain the guests on board.

Open Air Folk Museum Celebrates Malanka

The Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life Pyrohiv near Kyiv will celebrate the passing Orthodox Christian Christmas along with the traditional folk holiday of Malanka, or the New Year according to Julian calendar. The festival Koliadky. Shchedrivky. Malanky will take place at the site on January 13, 2013.

Pikkardiyska Tertsia Helps Raise Funds on a Silent Night

The Jesuit Church in Lviv will host two Christmas concerts by a famous Ukrainian vocal formation Pikkardiyska Tertsia. The acclaimed team will present the holiday program Tykha Nich… (Silent Night…) on January 14 and 15, 2013. Part of the funds received from ticket sale will be donated to the renovation works in the church, as its frescos bear tremendous cultural and historical value. The artifacts date back to the 18th century and were created by Francis and Sebastian Eckstein.

Baptism of Jesus Celebration Takes Place in Kyiv Extreme Park

Baptism of Jesus (Vodokhreshcha) is a popular holiday in Ukraine as it marks the end of the winter holiday season. The event traditionally involves ice swimming combined with Orthodox Christian rituals. Kyiv will begin this year’s celebration of Vodokhreshcha at 10 a.m. on January 19, 2013, in the Druzhby Narodiv park.

Mentally Handicapped Musicians Perform in Kyiv

The famous Dutch musical team Jostiband Orchestra will perform in Kyiv on January 29, 2013. While the stationary orchestra features 180 musicians, its touring team of 35 will arrive to Kyiv. The charity event will raise money for Ukrainian children with Down syndrome. The acquired funds will finance early development and educational programs.
