May 7 – October, 2012: Pinchuk Art Center Launches Anish Kapoor’s Solo Exhibition
The Solo Exhibition of the British sculptor of Indian descent Anish Kapoor will be opened at PinchukArtCenter in Kyiv on May 7, 2012. The works by the famous sculptor have already been showcased at the international center for contemporary art; however, this will be Kapoor’s first solo display in Kyiv.
May 11–31, 2012: Days of Lithuanian Photography Unfold in Ukraine
Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv will celebrate Lithuanian photography for three weeks in May 2012. The program of the Lithuanian Photography Days will feature photo exhibitions, video installations, and documentaries dedicated to famous Lithuanian photographers.
May 12, 2012: Mamaieva Sloboda Welcomes Folk Fest
Zhyly-Buly (Once Upon a Time) folklore festival will open its doors to the folklore groups blending in a rich ethnic palette. Various nationalities that lived side by side with Ukrainians and managed to preserve their unique culture will make appearance at historical-cultural complex Mamaieva Sloboda.
May 12–13, 2012: Vyshyvankas to Blossom in Ternopil
Vyshyvanka is a piece of traditional Ukrainian clothing. It is a richly embroidered shirt, usually made of linen. Normally vyshyvankas feature region-specific patterns. This particular type of shirt traces its roots back to the pre-Christian period. “Vyshyvanka is a national shrine. It symbolizes the connection between the generations. The shirt is passed from family to family and stored as a priceless treasure,” said one of the organizers of the fifth pan-Ukrainian festival of vyshyvankas and national costume Tsvit Vyshyvanky Yuriy Zhelikhovskyi.
May 13 – July 7, 2012: Ukrainian Formula of Anatoliy Kryvolap
One of Ukraine’s most celebrated and the most expensive representatives of contemporary art in Ukraine Anoliy Kryvolap will present his works at one of Kyiv’s museums. Notably, Kryvolap’s painting set a new record at the Phillips de Pury & Co auction that took place in London on October 13, 2011.
May 15–19, 2012: Eastern Ukrainian City Turns Into an Art-Piece
The International Festival of Modern Art Artodrom will take place in Luhansk on May 15-19, 2012. The festival organizers aim to transform the whole city, known for its peculiar industrial atmosphere, into a modern artistic object.
May 16–July 31, 2012: Apocalypse and Renaissance in the Kyiv Chocolate House
The so-called Chocolate House of Ukraine’s capital city will turn into metaphor for a world on the verge of disaster. The early XX century mansion on Shovkovychna Street will host an art project of renowned artist Oleh Kulik.
May 17 – July 31, 2012: The First Ukrainian Biennale of Modern Art to Open in Kyiv
The First Ukrainian Biennale of Modern Art Arsenale will kick-start on May 17, 2012, at the Kyiv’s art center Mystetskyi Arsenal. 80 artists from 40 countries will showcase their works at the exhibition.
May 29, 2012: Ukraine’s Gold Rush Infects Singapore
An exhibition of exclusive gold artifacts from Ukraine will be exhibited in Singapore throughout the summer of 2012.
May 29 – September 7, 2012: Kyiv Receives Best of Warsaw
The Kyiv National Art Museum will host and display the works from the Warsaw top art venues. Kyivers will have a chance to see works from Zachęta art gallery and Ujazdowski Castle center of contemporary art.
May 30, 2012: South Ukrainian Resort Alushta to Welcome Alley of Arts
The Alley of Arts will appear in the sea shore park Prymors’kyi in the Crimean city of Alushta. The park features large pedestrian area where 15 sculptures will be installed to create the Alley. The sculptures will commemorate the history of the city.
