Ukrainian Swimmers Win Gold at European Short Course Swimming Championship

Ukrainian athletes Daria Zevina and Andriy Govorov won gold defeating 673 swimmers from 42 countries at European Short Course Swimming Championship. In the aftermath of the tournament, Ukrainian swimmers set one national record, won two gold and two bronze medals.

Ukrainian Athlete Recognized as One of World Best Football Players of 2013

Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko from Dynamo Kyiv occupied the 26th place in the World Best Football Players of 2013 list of the World Soccer magazine. The list identifies the best players of 2013 based on the voting of international jury, sport journalists and millions football fans worldwide. Ukrainian footballer shares his spot on the list with Xavi Hernandez from Spanish Barcelona.

Britain, Hong Kong, Ukraine Sportsmen Win Titles at World Track Cycling Championship

Elevated 1870 meters above the Mean Sea Level, the hosting city of Aguascalientes, Mexico gave an extra benefit to the citizens of highlands and put extra pressure on the cyclists from lower level areas of Europe. Despite the natural aerial benefit of Latin Americans, Brit, Wane Dowel was the first to finish the scratch race second leg of the World Track Cycling Championship. He was shortly followed by Hong Kong’s King Lok Cheung and Ukraine’s Roman Lutsyshyn.

Verniaiev of Ukraine, Iordache of Romania Take Titles at Gymnastics World Cup

Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev and Romania’s Larisa Iordache took gold medals in a closely fought battle at the 2013 Glasgow World Cup, the second of four FIG World Cup meets in the 2013-2014 World Cup series (December 7; Glasgow’s Emirates Arena). reads british-gymnastics.org. At the same time Great Britain’s Daniel Purvis lost the final battle for men’s crown; USA’s active champion Elizabeth Price also took silver. Andrey Likhovitskiy of Belarus and Vanessa Ferrari of Italy took bronze according to all-around men and all-around women results.

Ukraine Wins European Women’s Team Championship

Ukrainian chess team took the first prize in the European chess championship that took place in Polish capital Warsaw on November 7-18, 2013. After nine rounds, the team got a total of 15 points. Russia and Poland – the first and second runner-ups, respectively, both earned 14 points in the competition.

Ukrainian Karateka Becomes World Champion

Ukrainian karateka Iryna Zaretska won gold at the 2013 World Karate Championships Cadet & Junior in the Female Junior 16-17 years −59kg category. This is the first karate world champion title a Ukrainian athlete ever acquired, informs the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine. Another Ukrainian karateka Ielyzaveta Sirosh won silver in the Female Cadet 14-15 years +54kg category.

Ukrainian Chukanov Wins Ferrari Racing Title

Ukrainian racer Sergey Chukanov won the title of the European champion in the Trofeo Pirelli race of the Ferrari Challenge Europe competition. Chukanov won the race over a close competitor Daniel Mancinelli from Italy, reports corseclienti.ferrari.com. At one point in the race, as the rivals were approaching the finish line, Chukanov and Mancinelli collided, with Chukanov ending the race on the gravel.

Uzelkov Boxes His Way to IBO Light Heavyweight Title

Ukrainian boxer Vyacheslav Uzelkov, 34, has won the International Boxing Organization International light heavyweight title in his match against American boxer Jaidon Codrington, 29. The 5’ 11½” (181 cm) Ukrainian boxer has beaten his taller opponent of 6’ 2” (188 cm) on the stage of the major Ukrainian sports arena Palats Sportu (Palace of Sports) in Kyiv on November 9, 2013.

Ukraine’s Zevina Takes Another Gold at Swimming World Cup in Tokyo

On the last day of the seventh stage of the FINA World Cup in Tokyo, Ukrainian swimmer Daryna Zevina won gold, reports the Federation of Swimming of Ukraine. She finished first in the 100-meter backstroke. Zevina also took gold (200-meter backstroke within 2:02.32) and bronze in Tokyo.

Ukrainian athletes – Valeriia Davydenko, Angelica Karchevskaia, and Ksenia Stepaniuk, took gold at the Seventh International Youth Circus Groups Festival – The Future of Circus 2013. Young athletes from Belarus, France, Germany, Latvia, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Transdniestria (breakaway Moldovan territory), etc. competed for the awards in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Masters Athletes Win Ten Gold Medals in Brazil

Ukrainian athletes won ten gold, six silver, and three bronze medals at the XX World Masters Athletics taking place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on October 16-27, 2013. Ukrainians were best in pole vaulting, long jump, triple jump, and a few race walks.

Ukrainian Athlete Wins Gold at Fourth Consecutive Leg of 2013 Swimming World Cup

Ukrainian swimmer Daryna Zevina, 19, won gold in a fourth consecutive leg of the 2013°FINA Swimming World Cup series. The “gold” streak started in Berlin, Germany, continued through the third leg in Moscow, Russia, fourth leg in Dubai, UAE and the fifth leg in Doha, Qatar.

11-Year-Old Ukrainian Brings Another Chess Victory to Ukraine

Ukrainian chess player Viktor Matviishen has became the winner of the 23rd European Youth Chess Championship 2013 in OPEN U12 category. The event took place in Budva, Montenegro, on September 29 – October 8, 2013. Matviishen got 7.5 points out of 9, beating his Russian counterpart Andrey Esipenko, who won silver. Thai Dai Van Nguyen took the third spot in the results table.

Kharkiv Rock Climbers Triumph at World Championship

Ukrainian athletes Oleksandr Zakolodniy and Anatoliy Ochenash, Kharkiv, won the 2013 mountaineering world championship in rock competition class. This was announced by the head of the Federation of Mountaineering and Rock Climbing in Kharkiv oblast Hennadiy Kopeyka, as reported by Unkrinform. There 14 men teams and seven women teams representing nine countries (CIS, Baltic countries, the Caucasus region, etc.) participated in the championship.

Volodymyr Klitschko Beats Povetkin

Famous Ukrainian boxer Volodymyr Klitschko has won the match against Russian counterpart Aleksandr Povetkin. Klitschko, 37, retained his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring Heavyweight Champion titles. Povetkin, on the other hand, has lost his WBA (Regular) Heavyweight title, which he won in August 2011. The match between the athletes ended after 12 rounds with all the three judges awarding Klitschko and Povetkin with respective 119-104 points.

Unbeaten WBC Champion Viktor Postol Scores Another Win

Ukrainian boxer Viktor Postol has won a fight against Colombian counterpart Ignacio Mendoza. The match took place in Kyiv club Sportlife on October 3. Postol defended his WBC International light welterweight title, which he just won in March 2013 in a fight against American boxer Henry Lundy.

Young Ukrainian chess player Maryan Kyrychenko has won the title of the European blitz chess champion among contestants under 10 years old. Kyrychenko participated in the 13th European Youth Blitz Chess Championship 2013 – Open U10, held in Budva, Montenegro, on September 25, 2013.

World’s #5 Middleweight Bursak Wins over Blackwell in Kharkiv

The EBU European middleweight titleholder, Ukrainian boxer Maxim Bursak, 29, came out of a knockdown to win the fight over England’s Nick Blackwell in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv. After going down in the fourth round following the right-hand punch, WBA/WBO #5 and WBC #11 Bursak managed to close all twelve rounds and become a victor. The scores were 114-113, 115-112, 115-112 in Bursak’s favor, reads wiltshiretimes.co.uk.

Ibragim Aldatov Receives Second World Championship Title

Ukrainian wrestler Ibragim Aldatov won his second world championship title at the Sitetalk Wrestling World Championships. Overall, the athlete now has three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal from his six trips to the world championships, note aroundtherings.com. Aldatov competed in the category 84 kilogram.

Ukrainian Heptathlon Star Wins Decastar, IAAF Combined Events Challenge

Ukrainian athlete Hanna Melnychenko, 30, has won the 2013 IAAF Combined Events Challenge, as well as the 37th Decastar meeting in the French town of Talence. Just in August of 2013, Melnychenko became the world pentathlon champion at the 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Kyiv Bids for EURO 2020

Aiming to repeat 2012 EURO football championship success, Ukraine submitted Kyiv and Donetsk as its next EURO bids. The Eastern European country has offered two of its major stadiums – Olimpiyskyi in Kyiv and Donbass Arena in Donetsk for hosting of the EURO 2020 European Football Championship. Olimpiyskyi bids to host the semifinals and final, while Donbass Arena is hoping to get one of the 12 standard sets – three group matches and a playoff.

Ukrainian Athlete Becomes World Kickboxing Champion

Ukrainian Serhiy Shynkarchuk became the world kickboxing champion in under 75 kg category (K-1) at the World Kickboxing Cup 2013. Shynkarchuk participated in four fights during the competition, knocking out his Polish counterpart in the first round of the final match, reports ubgd.lviv.ua. This was a hard victory against tough rivals, described his win Shynkarchuk. “World Cup is my best result to date,” admitted the athlete.

Ukraine’s High Jump World Champion Wins International Tournament in Italy

The ruling World Champion in high jump Bohdan Bondarenko of Ukraine took the first place at the 49th Palio Citta della Quercia meeting in Rovereto, Italy. The last European Athletics Premium Permit meeting of the summer brought Bondarenko his 13th win of the season. Interestingly, before the tournament, Italian press highly regarded Bondarenko’s upcoming participation.

Three Ukrainian athletes Viktoria Tereshuk, Ganna Buriak, and Iryna Khokhlova became world champions at the 53rd Modern Pentathlon World Championships, held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The athletes were first in the 3-member team-relay. Their total score reached 5,532.

Ukrainian Runner Wins 200m at Diamond League in Stockholm

Ukrainian athlete Serhiy Smelyk, 26, won 200m race at the 2013 IAAF Diamond League: Stockholm. Smelyk covered the distance in 20.54 seconds, beating his closest rival Norwegian runner Jaysuma Saidy Ndure. Jamaican sprinter Rasheed Dwyer was third.

After the final night in the Parc Jean Drapeau pool in Montreal, Canada, Ukraine finished at the top of the medals stand, followed by Russia in the second place and Great Britain – in the third, reads paralympic.org. Ukrainian Athlete Melnychenko Wins World Championship

Ukrainian heptathlete Hanna Melnychenko won gold at the IAAF World Championships which are currently taking place in Moscow, Russia. This is the first gold for Ukrainian track and field team during this tournament in Russia.
