Ukraine Gets Its Very Own World Champion in Unifight

Ukrainian athlete Vitaliy Hrebeniuk became world champion in unifight, following his victory in the 2012 Mondial Championship in Medyn, Russia. The World Unifight Championship featured 259 fighters from 38 countries. Ukrainian Hrebeniuk won gold in Light Unifight in the category over 95 kg.

Daryna Zevina Becomes European Champion in Swimming

Ukrainian swimmer Daryna Zevina took gold in the 200m backstroke at 11th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Istanbul, Turkey on December 12–16, 2012. Daryna came first with the result of 2.02,24. Silver medal went to American swimmer Bonnie Brandon; Duane Da Rocha (Spain) took bronze medal.

The Second Ukrainian Combat Games took place in neighboring with the Ukrainian capital town Browary. Long expected sport holiday brought together the best Ukrainian sportsmen and sportswomen who competed with each other in a various combat and martial art categories. Among those were: wushu, karate, Thai boxing, sumo and others.

29 Year Old Ukrainian – World’s Strongest Man

Strongman Serhiy Koniushok, 29, became world champion in the category under 110 kg. In the competition that featured seven weight lifting exercises with minimum rest time, Koniushok showed top results, while fellow Ukrainian Volodymyr Reksha was third. Polish athlete Marchin Sendwichki became the runner-up of the championship.

Ukrainian Kateryna Lahno Takes Gold in World Mind Games

Ukrainian chess player Kateryna Lahno, 22, became world champion in rapid chess at the SportAccord World Mind Games in Beijing. “I’m very happy. Competition is tough, players are best of the best,” commented this year’s champion and last year’s runner-up Kateryna Lahno. Chinese Hou Yifan, 18, took silver, Humpy Koneru, 25, from India was third in the competition.

Ukrainian Oleksandr Petriv Becomes World Champion in Military Shooting

Major Oleksandr Petriv won gold in the 47th CISM World Military Shooting Championships, which took place in Guangzhou, China, on December 1-9, 2012. Petriv became champion in the exercise that required 30 shots at a round target from the 25 meter distance and 30 shots at a silhouette target. He received the winning 589 points.

Ukrainian Boxer Bohdan Shelestyuk Wins World Cup of Petroleum Countries

Bohdan Shelestyuk took gold for his performance in the 2012 World Cup of Petroleum Countries. He competed in the 69 kg category. The competition featured 80 athletes from 14 countries. It took place in the city of Beloyarsk, Russia.

Ukraine Harvests Five Wrestling Golds in Finland and France

Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestlers won three gold medals at Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, and two – at Haavisto Cup, held in Ilmajoki, Finland. Ukraine also picked up silver in Ilmajoki and bronze at Nice.

Ukrainian Gymnast Takes Gold at FIG Challenger Cup

Ukrainian Olympian Oleh Vernyayev, 19, won gold on the parallel bars, beating Vietnam’s Nguyen Ha Thanh. Vernyayev took the title at the season’s Final FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) Challenger Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Ukrainian Anna Ushenina – World Chess Champion

Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Ushenina, 27, won the title of the FIDE World Chess Champion among women in the tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The final between Ushenina and Bulgarian player Antoaneta Stefanova, 33, began on November 27th and ended on December 1st with Ushenina’s victory in a tiebreaker.

Ukraine Wins Three Golds at World Classic Bodybuilding

Three Ukrainian bodybuilders were the best in male and female fitness, as well as body fitness during the 2012 World Classic Bodybuilding Championships and the IFBB World Cup, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, on November 23rd – 26th. Additionally, Ukrainian team brought home two bronze medals – in athletic fitness and body fitness.

Ukrainian Swimmers Conquer Europe

Ukraine’s swimmer Daryna Zevina took two gold medals at 2012 European Short Course Swimming Championships (Chartres, France). Zevina came first in the 100 m backstroke in 57.07, while France’s Laure Manaudou showed a result of 57.70, landing on the second position. The third place went to Czech Simona Baumrtova who finished in 58.08. Zevina took her second gold in the 200 m backstroke.

Ukrainian team of athletes became an absolute champion at the 2012 International Girya Sport Federation (IGSF) World Championships in Milan, Italy. Ukraine’s men athletes took six out of seven gold medals at the event, while women took three out of three.

Yaroslav Tarnovetskyi, 22, became a world champion in dynamic pyramid (a variation of Russian pyramid). Ukrainian competitor has beaten Russia’s Pavel Mekhovov in the final match with the result 6:5. The championship was held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. It attracted numerous participants from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, the U.S., Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Ukrainian Priest Becomes World Powerlifting Champion

A priest from southern Ukraine Viktor Kochmar defeated more than a thousand athletes from 43 countries, reports Holos Ukrayiny. The Ukrainian lifted a 220 kg barbell, becoming the world superheavyweight (over 125 kg) champion among athletes over 40 years old.

Ukrainian Ivanchuk Wins Kings Chess Tournament

Ukrainian chess grandmaster Vasyl Ivanchuk won The Kings Chess Tournament, taking place in Bucharest, Romania. Ivanchuk ended his final round with Bulgarian player Veselin Topalov in a tie. During a tiebreaker Ivanchuk won the first round, the second round ended in a tie. Italian chess prodigy Fabiano Caruana was third in the competition.

Ukrainian Tennis Player Wins WTA Challenger in India

18 year old Ukrainian female tennis player Elina Svitolina won her first WTA title in Pune, India. Ukrainian raising tennis star has managed to beat former Top 5 player – Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm – in the 1 hour 19 minutes long match 62:63. Svitolina took home a USD 20,000 prize and 160 ranking points.

Volodymyr Klitschko Defends Championship Title in a Twelve Round Bout

Ukrainian boxer Volodymyr Klitschko, 36, has defended his WBA world heavyweight champion title in a fight against Polish Mariusz Wach, 32, in Hamburg, Germany, on November 10, 2012. The athlete won the twelve round battle with the result 120:107, 120:107, 119:109.

AIBA Voted Ukrainian Usyk 2012 World’s Best Boxer

Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk received the title of the Best Elite Men Boxer of the Year awarded by the International Boxing Association. “The charismatic 25-year-old was one of the stand-out performers of the London 2012 Olympic Games”, reads the statement by AIBA. Another Ukrainian boxer claimed AIBA’s Best World Series of Boxing Boxer of the Year – Serhiy Derevyanchenko.

Two Ukrainian Sportsmen Recognized Among World’s Top 24

Ukraine’s two-time Olympic champion and a multiple world records breaker (race walking) Volodymyr Golubnichyi became the latest athlete to be named among the 24 inaugural Members of the IAAF Hall of Fame. In June, 2012, another Ukrainian sports legend and pole vaulting world record holder Serhiy Bubka was named among the world’s top 24 sportsmen. IAAF Hall of Fame has been created to mark the year of the International Association of Athletics Federations Centenary.

Roman Vasyliv became world champion among men aged 65-69 in the 69 kilogram category. At the international competition, held in Lviv, Liubov Hnatova was another Ukrainian athlete who brought home gold and the title of the world champion among women-weightlifters aged 55-59.

Lviv May Become Capital to 2022 Winter Olympics

Lviv will be the capital of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games if Ukraine wins the hosting bid for the competition. This is stated in the feasibility study of the Ukrainian National Project Olympic Hope. The study is aimed at applying to the International Olympic Committee for the right to host the Olympics. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has just approved the document.

Lightweight Ukraine Succeeds Among Heavyweight Nations at Paralympics 2012

Ukraine became the only country with GDP under one trillion to make it to the top 5 at the Paralympics 2012 in London. Taking into account GDP volume for each country in the 2012 Paralympics top 5, Ukraine has highest medal return. One medal won by the Eastern European emerging economy was worth under one billion in GDP count, while for all of Ukraine’s counterparts – from over 16 to more than 31 billion.

Ukrainian Team Qualifies for EuroBasket 2013 Early

Ukrainian national basketball team qualified for the FIBA EuroBasket 2013, to take place in Slovenia in September of 2013. Ukraine won over Austria in a match in Lviv with a result 68-57. “I congratulate the Ukrainian team. Ukraine is very strong. The Ukrainians played well and deserved to win”, commented Head Coach of the Austrian team Nedeljko Asceric.

Ukrainian Oleksiy Torokhtiy Goes Golden at 2012 Olympics

Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksiy Torokhtiy won gold medal in the 105 kilogram category among men at the Games of the XXX Olympiad. “I had a new dream which was to get onto the [Olympic] podium, and I didn’t care which place I would get. I didn’t come here as a tourist but as a person with a dream. I don’t know what happened today, it was just destiny,” commented his victory Torokhtiy, 26, as quoted by MSN News.
