Team Ukraine Wins 19 Medals at European Sambo Championships

Ukrainian sportsmen won 19 medals at the 2013 European Sport and Combat Sambo Championships in Crema, Italy (May 18-20). In the three day competition Ukrainians took three gold, seven silver, and nine bronze medals. 300 athletes from 29 countries participated in the competition. The championship featured competitions in three main categories – Men, Women, and Men Combat.

Ukraine Unveils Logo And Slogan For U16 European Basketball Championship 2013

Take off for the challenge - is the slogan for the upcoming U16 European Basketball Championships, which is scheduled to take place in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on August 8-18, 2013. The slogan and the logo have been presented by the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Olexandr Vilkul, President of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation (FBU) Olexandr Volkov, and EuroBasket 2015 Tournament Director Markiyan Lubkivsky.

Oleksandr Moiseenko Brings Another Chess Title to Ukraine

Ukrainian grandmaster Oleksandr Moiseenko has won the title of the European Chess Champion among men at the competition in Legnica, Poland. 286 chess players from 38 countries participated in the European Individual Chess Championship 2013, taking place on May 4-17, 2013. A total of 21 chess players from Ukraine were enrolled in the competition.

World’s Best Boxers: Mayweather Jr., Ward, Marquez, and Klitschko

Following his recent win in a fight against Pianeta, Volodymyr Klitschko strengthened his positions in Pound for Pound rating by The Ring Magazine, jumping to number four on the list. Klitschko is the only heavyweight boxer in the top ten. American Floyd Mayweather Jr. - RING, WBC welterweight champion - is number one on the list. He is followed by Andre Ward and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Ukrainian Gymnast Dominates International Competition in France

Ukrainian Olympian Ganna Rizatdinova won the Véronique de Kristoffy Memorial – the sixth stage of Rhythmic Gymnastics FIG World Cup (Corbeil-Essones, France, May 11-12, 2013). 19-year-old Rizatdinova took two gold, two silver medals and one bronze medal. Melitina Staniouta of Belarus closed the competition with silver, while Russia’s Margarita Mamun finished with bronze.

Pianeta Holds for 6 Rounds, Klitschko Wins Again

The match between Ukrainian boxer Volodymyr Klitschko, 37, and Italian Francesco Pianeta, 28, ended in a technical knockout. Referee Ernie Sharif ended the bout after Pianeta’s fall. This is the 60th win for younger Klitschko. Volodymyr defended his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring Heavyweight titles in the fight.

Ukraine Runs Marathon for Boston

Ukrainian capital hosts its fourth annual marathon on April 28, 2013. The event will pay tribute to the tragic events taking place at the 117th marathon in Boston on April 15, 2013. The explosions at the finish line took three lives and injured more than 200 people. To acknowledge the victims of the attack, each runner in the Kyiv race will receive a branded T-shirt reading “I Run for Boston.”

Ukrainian Boxer Defends WBO Title

Ukrainian boxer Serhiy Fedchenko, 32, defended his WBO title of the European light welterweight champion in a fight against the Spanish boxer Karim El Ouazghari, 33. The match lasted for 12 rounds at the Lokomotiv Sports Palace in eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

Ukraine Boasts Two Winners in World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships

Two Ukrainian athletes became world champions in saber fencing at the World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships in Poreč, Croatia, on April 6-14, 2013. Alina Komashchuk won gold individual junior saber fencing among women. Ukrainian Kostiantyn Voronov was first among cadet men saber fencers.

European Weightlifting Championships Gold Goes to Ukraine

Ukrainian athlete Yulia Paratova, 26, won gold medal in women double event - snatch and clean and jerk - in the weight category 53 kilograms at the 2013 EWF European Weightlifting Championships in Tirana, Albania. Paratova lifted a total of 194 kilograms (90 kilograms in snatch and 104 kilograms in clean and jerk.

Draughts Team From Ukraine Sets World Record

Ukrainian women draughts team has set a world record at the Second European Women Team Championship 2013 in Tallinn, Estonia. For the first time a national team (Olha Baltazhy and Viktoria Bielaya) has won in all three draughts events - classic, rapid, and blitz draughts at a European championship. Such result has never before been registered at both European and world championships, informed the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Becomes European Draughts Champion

Ukrainian Daryna Tkachenko won the title of the European Champion in draughts. She participated in the Sixth European Blitz Championship Women, which took place on March 23-24, 2013, in Budapest, Hungary. Ukrainian draughts player Maria Motrichko became the runner-up in the competition with 15 points against Tkachenko’s 16.

Pavlo Oliinyk Wins European Wrestling Gold

Ukrainian athlete Pavlo Oliinyk placed first in the men’s freestyle 96 kilogram category at the 2013 European Wrestling Championships, held in Tbilisi, Georgia. Oliinyk won all of his four bouts, taking down Polish Kamil Skaskiewicz in the final match. Bronze in the category was shared by Bulgarian Lyuben Borisov Iliev and Russian Vladislav Baytsaev.

Ukrainian Athletes Shine at European Cup Winter Throwing

Ukrainian junior women throwers showed the best team result in the final competition at the 13th European Cup Winter Throwing, held in Castellon, Spain, on March 16-17, 2013. Additionally, Ukrainian athlete Hanna Habina won gold in javelin throwing event among female athletes under 23. Ukrainian representatives also won four silver and two bronze medals during the event.

Ukrainian fencer Olga Kharlan won the second individual gold this season, becoming the winner of the World Cup Fencing Championship, held on March 15-16 in Antalya (Turkey). Her individual effort helped the team get to the top and win gold medal at the competition.

Ukrainian Runners Win Gold and Silver at Jerusalem Marathon

Ukrainian athletes became gold and silver medal winners at the Jerusalem Marathon, which took place on March 1, 2013 in Jerusalem, Israel. The sports event featured about 13,000 participants from 53 countries, who competed in 11 age categories (ages 13 to 80). Jerusalem marathon included three events: marathon (42 km 195 m), half marathon (21 km 100 m), and 10 km run.

Ukraine – First in the Medal Table of the European Archery Championships

Ukrainian archers showed the best result on the medal table of the European Archery Indoor Championships Rzeszow 2013. Valentyn Kutsyy won gold in Recurve Junior Men category, fellow Ukrainian Valentyn Sobko took the fourth spot in the rating. Maryana Struk scored the highest ranking in the Recurve Junior Women competition. Ukrainian Veronika Marchenko became seventh in this category. All in all,Ukrainians won the most medals at the sports event in Rzeszow, Poland.

Ukraine Stashes Two More European Champion Titles

Ukrainian athletes Olha Saladukha and Nataliya Lupu became European champions in triple jump and 800 meter race on track. At the European Athletics Indoor Championships taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden, on March 1-3, 2013, Saladukha won triple jump gold with the result of 14.88 meters. Lupu covered the 800 meter distance in 2.00,26 minutes.

Ukrainian Athletes Win European Shooting Championship

Ukrainian Halyna Avramenko and Vladyslav Prianyshnykov won gold in 10m Running Target Women and 10m Running Target Men, respectively, at the European Championship 10m in the Danish city of Odense. Another Ukrainian shooter Vladyslav Shchepotkin won silver in 10m Running Target Mixed Men Junior, while his teammate Pavlo Korostylov took bronze in 10M Air Pistol Men Junior event.

Ukrainian Team Wins Four Golds at International Wrestling Tournament

Ukrainian athletes won four gold medals at the XIX International Wrestling Tournament, held in Kyiv on February 15-17, 2013. The tournament, often referred to as the mini world championship, featured performances by nearly 300 participants from 19 countries. Ukrainians won in categories of 51, 55, 67, and 120 kilogram.

Ukrainian Athlete Wins Long Jump Gold in Italian Championship

Ukrainian athlete Daria Derkach took gold in long jump at the 2013 Italian Athletics Indoor Championships – the 44th edition of the championships (Ancona, Italy, 16-17 February 2013). Derkach, 1993, became a winner in the Promises Under 23 category with the final result of 6.20 meters (in qualification she jumped 6.04 meters). Notably, Derkach was the only non-Italian participant of the competition.

Ukrainian Biathlete Becomes World Champion

Ukrainian biathlete Olena Pidhrushna, 26, won a gold and a bronze medal at the 46th Biathlon World Championships, held at Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic. As the athlete became best in Women’s Sprint, another Ukrainian – Vita Semerenko – took a bronze in the competition. Additionally, Pidhrushna was the second runner-up in Women’s Pursuit.

Olympic Champion Yana Shemyakina Remains World’s Strongest Woman Fencer

Olympic champion Yana Shemyakina has retained the status of the world’s strongest woman fencer. Shemyakina won gold medal at the Women’s Epee Grand Prix Tournament that took place on February 2-3, 2013 in Budapest, Hungary as reported by the National Fencing Federation of Ukraine.
