September 27, 2012: Ukrainian Arm Wrestler Defends His World Champion Title
Kyiv, September 27, 2012. Ukrainian athlete Andriy Pushkar became the winner of the 2012 World Arm Wrestling Championship, which took place on September 10-18, 2012 in Sào Vicente, Brazil. He defeated his opponents winning gold medals for both left- and right-hand fights.
September 18, 2012: Two Ukrainian Sportsmen Recognized Among World’s Top 24
Kyiv, September 18, 2012. Ukraine’s two-time Olympic champion and a multiple world records breaker (race walking) Volodymyr Golubnichyi became the latest athlete to be named among the 24 inaugural Members of the IAAF Hall of Fame. In June, 2012, another Ukrainian sports legend and pole vaulting world record holder Serhiy Bubka was named among the world’s top 24 sportsmen. IAAF Hall of Fame has been created to mark the year of the International Association of Athletics Federations Centenary.
August 7, 2012: Ukrainian Lviv Hosts 2012 World Veteran Weightlifting Championships
Kyiv, August 7, 2012. Western Ukrainian city of Lviv is getting ready to host the IWF-World Masters Weightlifting Championships in September 2012. Notably, a little over a month ago Ukraine hosted the EURO 2012 European football championship and is already planning to accommodate the Euro Basketball Championships (2015).
July 19, 2012: 16 Gold Medals for Ukrainian Canoeists
Kyiv, July 19, 2012. The Ukrainian men’s canoe team took home a total of 16 gold medals in the European Canoe Sprint Junior & Under 23 in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal. Sweeping up eight of the 16 medals were Pavlo Altukhov and partners Andriy Rybachok and Yuriy Vandiuk. Rybachok and Vandiuk had an impressive start, finishing their first race with a 4.528 second lead on Poland.
June 27, 2012: Ukraine’s Serhiy Bubka Inducted Into IAAF Hall of Fame
Kyiv, June 26, 2012. International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Vice-President, International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member, National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine President and a sports legend Serhiy Bubka was named among the 24 inaugural Members of the IAAF Hall of Fame. Together with Bubka, IAAF Hall of Fame, which has been created to mark the year of the IAAF Centenary, simultaneously claimed the name of Sebastian Coe, Great Britain.
June 26, 2012: Final World Cup of the Season Topped by Ukrainian Fencer
Kyiv, June 26, 2012. Three-time Senior World individual medalist, acting European Champion Olha Kharlan (Ukraine) won golden medal at the Korfanty Cup in Chicago, Ill., USA – the final world cup stage before the Olympics in London. In her final bout with the two-time Olympic Champion Mariel Zagunis (USA) Kharlan managed to close out the bout, 15:13.
April 12, 2012: Gymnastics Gold and Silver for Ukraine
Kyiv, April 12, 2012. Ukrainian athletes Ihor Radivilov and Mykola Kuksenkov received high awards at the 2012 Gymnastics World Cup in Zibo, China. Ihor Radivilov topped the list of men’s vault, while Mykola Kuksenkov won silver for his horizontal bar performance at the 2012 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup.
February 24, 2012: Ukraine Gets Two Indoor Athletics Golds in Stockholm
Kyiv, February 24, 2012. Ukrainian athletes Mariya Ryemyen and Olha Saladukha won gold medals at XL Galan indoor athletics competition held in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 23, 2012. Olesya Povh brought Ukrainian team another medal – silver – at XL Galan.
February 22, 2012: Best Female Shooter of 2011 – Ukrainian Olena Kostevych
Kyiv, February 22, 2012. Olympic champion Olena Kostevych received the prestigious 2011 best female shooter award at the European 2012 Shooting Championships held in Vierumaki, Finland, on February 14-20. During the competition the Ukrainian team scored five gold, six silver and nine bronze medals. Members of Ukrainian team, including Galina Avramenko, Ganna Chehovska, Kateryna Gavriushenko, Mariia Kramar, Vladyslav Prianishnikov, won gold at the Championships in Vierumaki.
January 18, 2012: World Boxing Council Names Vitali Klitschko Boxer of the Year
Kyiv, January 18, 2012. Vitali Klitschko won the title Boxer of the Year in the chart Best WBC Boxers and Boxing Bouts of the Year, reported World Boxing News. In 2011 Klitschko made two mandatory bouts this year confirming his title as WBC World Champion.
January 17, 2012: Ukrainian Team Sets World Record at National Archery Indoor Championships
Kyiv, January 17, 2012. Men’s archery team from the Lviv region (Western Ukraine) set a new world record at the Ukrainian Archery Indoor Championships. Markian Ivashko, Yevhen Marchenko, and Yaroslav Mokryns’kyi scored the unbelievable 239 points out of 240. Female contestants Lidia Sichenikova and Polina Radionova set a European record among juniors (they scored 584 of 600 points each) at the same event.

Ukrainian football player Andriy Shevchenko is one of the most successful top division goal scorers among the still active players in the world, according to the news release by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS). Shevchenko scored 217 goals in 440 matches as of December 31, 2011.

December 29, 2011. A Ukrainian basketball player Kyrylo Fesenko, 25, has agreed to a year-long deal with NBA’s Golden State Warriors. The California based team signed the athlete for a 1.07 million gig, reports SI.com.

December 13, 2011: Ukrainian Swimmers Win Four Medals at European Championship in Poland
Kyiv, December 13, 2011. Ukrainian athletes brought home three golden and one bronze medal from the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland. Two out of four medals were taken by the female swimmer Daryna Zevina.
December 8, 2011: Andriy Pushkar Becomes 11 Time World Armwrestling Champion
Kyiv, December 8, 2011. A 26 year old Ukrainian armwrestler won his 11th title at the XXXIII World Armwrestling Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The winning Ukrainian sportsman Andriy Pushkar wrestled in the 110+ kg category and won gold medals for both left- and right-hand fights. Five other athletes from Ukraine also occupied top spots in the tournament in Kazakhstan.
October 31, 2011: Ukrainian Team Wins Three Golds in the World Kickboxing Championships
Kyiv, October 31, 2011. Ukrainian kickboxers Bezverkhyi, Kirpan, and Solovey won gold medals at the WAKO World Kickboxing ChampionshipsK1, LK, LC, LK 2011 in Skopje, Macedonia. The Ukrainian team claimed the total of 8 awards in the competition between 823 kickboxers from 54 countries.
October 4, 2011: Ukrainian Junior Tennis Players Win European Championship
Kyiv, October 4, 2011. A Ukrainian team of junior tennis players under 18 won gold at the Summer European Tennis Championship that ended in Lleida, Spain, this weekend. Ukraine has won the Reina/Soisbault Cup for the second time in three years.
September 6, 2011: Ukrainian Men’s Team Wins Junior World Championship in Beach Volleyball
Kyiv, September 6, 2011. Ukrainian men’s team won the 11th annual double-gender FIVB Swatch Junior World Championships over the weekend in Halifax, Canada. 59 teams from 24 countries competed in the Championships. Scoring high in all seven matches, Ukrainians Sergiy Popov and Valeriy Samoday won gold, beating the Polish duo Kantor/Losiak in the final set.
September 5, 2011: Extreme Sports: South Ukrainian Yalta Hosts World Cliff Diving Finals
Kyiv, September 5, 2011. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 finished the season in Southern Ukrainian resort city of Yalta over the weekend. 15 thousand guests witnessed the final seventh leg of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 competition. The event culminated in crowning Gary Hunt, the UK, as the champion of the 2011 season.
September 2, 2011: Ukraine Wins Gold in Triple Jump at 2011 World Championships in Athletics
Kyiv, September 2, 2011.Ukrainian Olha Saladuha became gold medalist in the 13th World Championships in Athletics, held in Daegu, South Korea. Saladuha won the finals in the triple jump competition among females and became the world champion.
August 8, 2011: Teen Ukrainian Tennis Player Wins International Tennis Federation Tournament in Moscow
Kyiv, August 8, 2011. Valentyna Ivakhnenko, 18, won the International Tennis Federation tournament held in Moscow on August 1-7, 2011. Her victory became a significant achievement for Ivakhnenko securing her a spot in the TOP 300 tennis players in the world according to the WTA rating.
August 1, 2011: Powerboat Competition Formula F1H20 Carves Ukrainian Waters at the Kyiv Sea for the First Time
Kyiv, August 1, 2011. Over the weekend F1 H2O World Championship for power boating was held in Ukraine for the first time. The event lasted for the three sunny days at the Kyiv Sea and gathered about 60 000 visitors. The teams from China, Italy, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. tested Ukrainian waters for the first time in the history of power boating sport.
July 21, 2011: Ukraine to Host 32nd World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships
Kyiv, July 21, 2011. Ukraine will host the 32nd World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in 2013. The respective agreement has been signed between the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Ukrainian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation in Lausanne, Switzerland. The official FIG statement explains that Ukraine deserves the honor of hosting this major sports event being “a country that boasts such a rich Gymnastics tradition and has long been one of Rhythmic Gymnastics’ leading lights”.
July 18, 2011: Ukrainian Fencing Team Wins Top Prizes at the European Championship
Kyiv, July 18, 2011. Olympic Champions Olga Harlan and Halyna Pundyk win two medals — gold and bronze respectively — at the European Senior Fencing Championships in Sheffield, the UK. As the result of her victory Olga Harlan is titled the reigning Champion of Europe.
July 11, 2011: Ukrainian Paralympic Swim Team Ranked Number One in the European Championships
Kyiv, July 12, 2011. Holding the top position since the very start of the Berlin 2011 International Paralympic Committee Swimming European Championships, the Ukrainian national team became a winner with an overall result of 105 awards total, including 41 gold, 37 silver, and 27 bronze medals. Followed by the UK with 27 gold medals and the cumulative score of 83 awards, the Ukrainian team has become a confident leader of the competition.
June 22, 2011: World’s Renowned Urbanathlon Comes to Kyiv
Kyiv, June 22, 2011. For the first time the international Festival Men’s Health URBANATHLON took place in Kyiv, Ukraine. The festival originates from the United States of America and has become an event popular worldwide – URBANATHLON already toured 12 countries. Ukraine initiated hosting the event in order to promote health consciousness – the spokesperson of the event Lidia Turkovska said: “We are a healthy nation, so why not?”
June 15, 2011: Ukraine Wins International Official Showjumping Competition in Horse Racing
Kyiv, June 15, 2011. Ukrainian team consisting of Olexander Onishchenko, Kateryna Ofel, Nagel Björn, Oleg Krasiuk, and Casio Rivetti won the 2011 international competition in horse racing that took place in the Polish Baltic port of Sopot on June 9-12, 2011. The team brought the FEI Nations Cup home.The Sopot Grand Prix was held under the honorary patronage of the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski.

Kyiv, June 14, 2011. Ukrainian weightlifter Vasyl Martyniuk lifted 321 kg in combined score during his participation in the European Master Weightlifters Championship, held on May 28 — June 4, 2011 at the Joseph Müller Hall in Heinsheim, Germany. This beats the previous world record by one kilogram.
