Ukrainian Eastalgia Takes Outstanding Production Award at SehsuechteKyiv, April 30, 2013. Film by Ukrainian director Daria Onyshchenko Eastalgia (2012) won in the category of Outstanding Production Achievement of the German student festival Sehsuechte. The prize is a participation in a seminar, otherwise worth EUR 1,000. The jury highlighted “professionalism, team spirit, farsightedness, and international orientation” of Eastalgia. The award recipients were film’s producers Rafael Parente, Korbinian Dufter and Simon Amberger.

Ukrainian Folk Wisdom Wins at Universe Multicultural FilmKyiv, April 29, 2013. Ukrainian animated series Folk Wisdom (Narodna Mudrist) produced by the National Television Company of Ukraine was awarded the first prize in the nomination animated short films at the Universe Multicultural Film Festival, held in Los Angeles (USA) from April 12 to 14, 2013, as reported by the press office of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Documentary Wins Gold at Belgrade Film FestivalKyiv, April 9, 2013. Ukrainian documentary Yaderni Vidkhody (Nuclear Waste) by Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi won gold medal in the category Best Animated, Short or Experimental Film at the Belgrade Documentary and Short Film Festival. This is the third international win for the film, which has previously received Silver Pardino - Leopards of Tomorrow award at the 2012 Locarno International Film Festival and the Grand Prize of the 2012 Open Film Festival of the CIS, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia Kinoshok.

Golden Lion Festival Gathers International Theaters in Lviv 
Lviv, October 3, 2012. The International Theater Festival “Golden Lion-2012” was a smashing success. The festival annually takes place from September 27th to October 6th, inviting citizens and guests to explore the wonders of the ancient city of Lviv. This year’s program presented a number of performances from theaters across the country, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Chernigiv. European cities such as Krakow, Jelena Gora, Vilnius, Brest, Dushanbe, Paris, Brussels, Prague, and Georgia were invited to take part as well. This year’s event even saw participation by theater schools all the way from New York, USA. This year’s festival was dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Les Kurbas, a famous Ukrainian theater director of the late 1900’s to early 1930’s.

Kyiv Holds Footwork Battle at the Burn Battle School 
Kyiv, September 8, 2012. The first ever Burn Battle School Championship rocked the night at Kyiv’s club BINGO with a door-busting attendance of more than 300 people. Break-dancers, aka b-boys and b-girls, from Germany, Belarus, Russia, Denmark, Holland, United States, and United Kingdom, of course Ukraine and more, danced their socks off in amazing audience interactive, up close and personal break dance battles. The championship sponsored by big names such as Burn Energy Drink and Snickers invited world famous b-boys such as Jeromeskee of the Massive Monkees crew USA, Physicx of the Rivers Crew Korea, and the one and only legendary Ken Swift of the VII Gems Rock Division USA to judge the event.

Kyivan Rus Park Recreates Medieval Ukrainian Culture 
Kyiv, August 27, 2012. The international festival of culture and history Bylyny (epic) of Ancient Kyiv of IX-XI Century took place at the Kyivan Rus Park over the weekend of August 25-26, 2012. The festival offered an exciting experience of ancient medieval life including everything from horseback riding to a realistic knight-and-sword battle performed by over 700 experienced reenactment warriors from around the world. Guests of this historical festival were presented with a rare opportunity to learn about the time roughly 1130 years ago.

Ethno Festival Harvest 2012-Toloka Reexamines Agricultural Roots of Ukraine 
Kyiv, August 7, 2012. The Third International Ethno Festival Harvest 2012-Toloka kicked off just outside of Kyiv at the Pyrogiv open air museum. Hundreds of folks attended the event, enjoying themselves among the endless activities offered. And despite the consistent 31C degree weather over its three-day running, patrons nonetheless happily melted under the sun, amusing themselves with music, food, dance, and hands-on crafts as they celebrated the end of summer’s harvest and the welcoming of a new season.

Ukrainian Film Wins Crystal Globe at Karlovy VaryKyiv, July 9, 2012. The 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival determined its winners, and Ukrainian black and white feature film House With a Turret by Eva Neymann won the competition section East of the West. “The film got most points, and we did not have to have a discussion as we do with other films. House With a Turret is very comprehensible,” said one of the jury members Natascha Drubek.

World’s Largest Donut Mosaic Flavors Ukrainian Christmas 
Lviv, January 10, 2012. “I have attended other Guinness World Records mosaics but I’ve never seen anything like this with donuts,” commented the giant mosaic of 7,040 donuts (pampukh in Ukrainian) Jack Broadbank, official representative of the Guinness World Records. The creation that became a new Guinness World record was made in western Ukrainian city of Lviv as part of the Pampukh Festival.

Cannes-Acclaimed Drama To Close 41st Molodist Festival in UkraineKyiv, October 27, 2011. Today the closing film of the international movie festival Molodist has been announced. The drama Elena (2011) directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev will conclude the Ukraine’s largest film festival on October 30, 2011. French stilt walkers, Burundian drummers, Italian flag wavers, traditional Basque and British-Ukrainian dancers entertained the amazed audiences at the Fourth International Folk Festival “Etnovyr”. The festival took place in the Western Ukrainian city of Lviv on August 20 through August 24, 2011. Folk parades, concerts, culinary workshops, and a folk chess show also unfolded at “Etnovyr”.

Sorochyntsi Fair Rekindles National Ukrainian Folk Traditions 
Kyiv, August 23, 2011. A 1045 lbs traditional Ukrainian bread “korovai” was baked at the traditional Ukrainian annual fair “Sorochynskyi Yarmarok”, setting the new record not only for Ukraine but also for the neighboring Russia. The fair customarily takes place in the Eastern Ukrainian village of Velyki Sorochyntsi, Poltava region, in the third week of August. This year’s fair went on between August 16-21 and featured various festivities, workshops, contests, and performances, aimed to entertain the audience while producers and traders presented their goods: gifts, souvenirs, musical instruments, antiques, art, handicrafts, equipment for artisan, clothing, bijouterie, as well as farming equipment, farm produce, etc.

5th International Festival of Fire Lights up Ukrainian Capital 
Kyiv, June 13, 2011. The 5th International Festival of Fire was held in Kyiv, capital of Ukraine, at the downtown square Kontraktova Ploshcha and the Euro 2012 venue, Olimpiysky National Sports Complex on June 10-11. Artists from Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Scotland and the US came to the Ukrainian capital for the weekend to showcase their fire mastering skills.

Ukraine hosts the European Film FestivalKyiv, May 27, 2011. The European Film Festival, which is traditionally held to celebrate Europe Days in Ukraine, was launched in Kyiv for the third year in a row. It will last for a week until June 1st.
