French stilt walkers, Burundian drummers, Italian flag wavers, traditional Basque and British-Ukrainian dancers entertained the amazed audiences at the Fourth International Folk Festival “Etnovyr”. The festival took place in the Western Ukrainian city of Lviv on August 20 through August 24, 2011. Folk parades, concerts, culinary workshops, and a folk chess show also unfolded at “Etnovyr”.

A 1045 lbs traditional Ukrainian bread “korovai” was baked at the traditional Ukrainian annual fair “Sorochynskyi Yarmarok”, setting the new record not only for Ukraine but also for the neighboring Russia. The fair customarily takes place in the Eastern Ukrainian village of Velyki Sorochyntsi, Poltava region, in the third week of August. This year’s fair went on between August 16-21 and featured various festivities, workshops, contests, and performances, aimed to entertain the audience while producers and traders presented their goods: gifts, souvenirs, musical instruments, antiques, art, handicrafts, equipment for artisan, clothing, bijouterie, as well as farming equipment, farm produce, etc.

The international expert committee in artistic blacksmithing issued a decision to honor the city of Ivano-Frankivs’k with an Alfred Habermann award – a prestigious international award in the fieldof blacksmithing art. Ivano-Frankivs’k becomes the first city within the territory of the former Soviet Union to receive the award. The Western Ukrainian city has a long history of the blacksmith craft and is famous for its blacksmith festivals and exhibitions.

Over the weekend F1 H2O World Championship for power boating was held in Ukraine for the first time. The event lasted for the three sunny days at the Kyiv Sea and gathered about 60 000 visitors. The teams from China, Italy, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. tested Ukrainian waters for the first time in the history of power boating sport.

She developed a one day excursion route along Kyiv downtown area. Meghan’s inspiration for the sightseeing trip came from her initial surprise at the magnificence of Kyiv upon her first days in the city.

The traditional folk celebration of the summer solstice Ivana Kupala Day was held at the Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life in Pyrogovo, near Kyiv. At the event youth jumped over the flames of bonfires, girls floated flower wreaths, sang folk songs as well as watched the mythical fern flower bloom.

Holding the top position since the very start of the Berlin 2011 International Paralympic Committee Swimming European Championships, the Ukrainian national team became a winner with an overall result of 105 awards total, including 41 gold, 37 silver, and 27 bronze medals. Followed by the UK with 27 gold medals and the cumulative score of 83 awards, the Ukrainian team has become a confident leader of the competition.

The first and only in the world museum of lard opened in West Ukrainian Lviv. Lard is a popular product in Ukraine widely used as cooking fat, as well as a sandwich ingredient. Lard is called salo in Ukrainian and often regarded as a characteristic feature of Ukrainian cuisine.
